
Somehow, we often forget that photography, much like painting and other creative activities, is the final result of a process, and that it is precisely this process that shapes and develops its meaning. It is true that an image, as a static object, cannot show us the full context experienced by the photographer while making the photograph. Yet this does not prevent an important part of that experience from finding its way into the image through the emotions it conveys, the atmosphere it recreates, and the subtle nuances that our minds perceive intuitively. In a sense, photographs are made up of multiple overlapping layers, each contributing a part of the information they contain.
This image, taken near the Ebro Reservoir, is a good example of that multilayered nature. The scene is simple: an oak tree provides shelter for several horses resting in its shade beneath a vast canopy. The linear arrangement of the animals works particularly well thanks to a slightly asymmetrical pattern that reinforces the sense of movement and dynamism. It is a simple photograph that clearly communicates what it depicts. Yet beyond the composition and the various elements that make it up, I believe we can also perceive a certain sense of warmth, kindness, and welcome.
The meadow where the horses were grazing could only be reached by a narrow dirt and gravel track. When I spotted the scene in the distance, I immediately stopped the car, but there was nowhere suitable to park. Given how remote the area was, I decided to leave it right in the middle of the track. Slowly, I approached the horses and, far from being frightened or wary, they happily came to greet me. They were clearly domestic animals and well cared for. I barely had time to take a couple of photographs before they came over to say hello.
While I was with them, I noticed a car appearing at the far end of the track, heading directly towards mine. I immediately became concerned. I assumed the driver, probably the owner of the vehicle and perhaps also of the land I had wandered onto, would be annoyed with me, and to be fair, he would have had every reason to be. Instead of stopping, however, he simply drove off the track, went around my car, and continued on to a nearby field. A man and a young boy got out and, to my surprise, greeted me with a friendly wave before getting on with their work.
Accustomed to the distrust that I often encounter back home, and even to the occasional threat in similar situations, the attitude of those people left me completely disarmed. It is clearly a welcoming land, both in its people and in its animals, and I believe that this also comes across in the photograph. Beneath the visible elements, the light, the textures, and the shadows, there is another layer that speaks of trust, friendliness, warmth, and hospitality. It is information that is just as important as the visual content, perhaps even more so, and it is essential to fully understanding the scene. Every photograph has its own story, and learning how to read it is part of the experience of looking at it.
